Since becoming a certified Atlanta color consultant, I have done numerous color consultations, both interior and exterior. Clients often ask me, “Patsy, which paint finish should I use?” Great question! Here is a little information on each finish that I hope will help you decide which one is right for you.
Flat paint is the thickest. As my good friend Brian (Manager of the Sherwin-Williams store in Duluth) has told me, “The higher the gloss, the thinner the paint.” Flat is a great choice for walls (and ceilings) because it is so thick that you can easily do retouches when the walls get scuffed up without it being evident. Having said that, the downside of using flat paint is that you cannot easily wipe down the walls.- Eg-shel is also a good choice for walls. It is still relatively thick, but has a slight sheen to it and can be wiped down. Having said that, please keep in mind that the higher the sheen, the more evident the brush strokes will be on the walls when you later touch them up.
- Satin is a good choice for kitchens and bathrooms due to the fact that it has a high “wipeability” factor. (I just made up that word. How do you like it?)
- Semi-gloss is perfect for doors and trim. With its high sheen, it does a beautiful job of “popping” all your crown molding and other trim against the flat or eggshell walls.
